The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
