Users will soon have a new feature that allows them to lessen the volume of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the company revealed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 thousand million AI videos.
Testing and Rollout
The update is being tested over the following weeks before a full-scale launch. This development aligns with a surge in content created by AI, spurred by new video-generation tools.
AI Proliferation Online
It has been noted that approximately one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this output is considered low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently illogical or surreal.
“We know from our community that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to science explainers, and we aim to offer the community the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” stated a platform representative.
Scale of AI Content
The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network tagged as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 m pieces of content are submitted to the platform every day, making AI-generated material a minor percentage of its overall inventory.
Customizing Your Feed
Viewers will be in a position to decrease or raise the level of AI content they view by opening the content preference option in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Other topics that are already be adjusted under the filter include politics, clothing, cosmetics, and movement.
AI Disclosure Rules
The platform’s guidelines oblige content makers to label lifelike AI-made content, and it prohibits dangerous AI impersonations of celebrities or critical incidents. Any believable AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be deleted under its user guidelines.
Furthermore, the platform will from now on add an AI-generated tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for spotting artificial media. This action is designed to deter users from trying to bypass the tagging system.
Responsible AI Funding
TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2m AI literacy fund for professionals and institutions to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit educational bodies specializing in teaching coding and technology.
Moderation Strategy
The platform has justified its moderation strategy, during debate over plans to lay off numerous safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to cut a significant number of roles in its user protection division in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.
A company official stated that people-led review would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by filtering out the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.
We believe it is crucial to combine humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
